Identify and label the planets on the "Our Solar System" worksheet then match them with their distance from the sun.
Students must rely on the knowledge they already have about the solar system to correctly name the planets and match them with the distance they are from the sun. This worksheet allows students to clearly see the planets and even though they would not know the exact distances, they would be able to use their reasoning skills to match the planets with their distances.
A ready to go worksheet is available for teachers to use in the classroom. Download the file to the right and print off as needed. An example of how the worksheet should be filled in is provided for teacher reference below.

'KWL' Charts
Other useful tools for gauging what students are able to remember are KWL charts. To gauge what students already know about our solar system, ask students are to fill out the first two columns of the KWL chart (what I know & what I want to know) at the start of the unit. This will give the teacher a better idea of what topics to spend more time on and is very helpful information when creating engaging, relatable and relevant learning experiences (Houghton Mifflin Company, n.d.). Once the topic has been thoroughly explored students can complete the final column (what have I learned). This form of self-assessment is useful for both the teacher and the student.
